Magnolia ‘Hot Pants’

Philippe de Spoelberch bought this plant, named Magnolia campbellii subsp. mollicomata, in 1984 from nursery Esveld in the Netherlands, but the name turned out to be incorrect. It is most likely a hybrid of this tree with for example Magnolia cylindrica or Magnolia x soulangeana. This strong tree with its dome shaped crown and low pending branches is a sister seedling of our selection ‘Hot Lips’, from which the name ‘Hot Pants’ was derived. Magnolia ‘Hot Pants’ is less hardy than Magnolia ‘Hot Lips’, but in milder years the numerous pale pink flowers with dark pink bases amply make up for this.
