Arboretum Wespelaar vzw, a non profit organisation, was set up in 2001 to manage the botanical collections of some 19 ha of the estate of Philippe de Spoelberch in Haacht-Wespelaar situated to the North of the garden of Herkenrode (Belgium). Since 2005 this task is now the responsibility of Foundation Arboretum Wespelaar. It is the intention of the board of the Arboretum to arrange for the grounds to be open to the public on a regular basis once the necessary facilities are available.

The private garden Herkenrode and the Arboretum are only open to guided groups on request or to members of asbl Jardins ouverts – Open tuinen vzw (http://www.open-tuinen.be/).

The dendrological collections of the Arboretum contain circa 2850 specimen of trees and shrubs, often rare taxa collected in their natural habitat. But also many cultivars and selections have their place in the collection.

Following genera have received special attention and are therefore very well represented: Magnolia, Ilex, Rhododendron, Acer, Viburnum, Euonymus, Betula, Fraxinus, Tilia, Stewartia, Liquidambar, Lindera, Styrax, Fagus, Quercus and Carpinus.

As long as the Arboretum Wespelaar cannot open its grounds to the public on a regular basis, we will provide restricted information on this website.
Once the Arboretum is open, this site will contain all necessary and relevant information for the public and all those interested in woody plants.
